Review: Power to Become by David A. Bednar

"Can I truly come to know that the path I am pursuing in my life pleases God? And if it is possible to know these things, how can I know?" --Elder David A. Bednar

Elder Bednar's questions echo what I have often wondered myself. As I try to improve, how do I know if I'm headed in a direction that pleases my Heavenly Father? It's that assurance that I yearn for most, the peace I struggle to attain.

Elder David A. Bednar is such a masterful and insightful teacher! Before I read this book, I thought I had a decent understanding of the Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. Within the first chapter, I was amazed at how much more the Spirit taught me about the purpose and strength that comes from the Atonement and how to apply that to encourage me to stretch a little farther and try a little harder with the knowledge that I will succeed. I liked how Elder Bednar stressed specific words in scripture verses that I'd skimmed over before, giving emphasis which helped me truly ponder what my Heavenly Father expects of me and helps me to become. The quotes and scriptures, images and stories Elder Bednar shares inspired me, and now that I know there are two other books, I will be looking for them as well. The book itself would have been enough, but I love the feature of the QR codes that link to video discussions. They assist in further understanding, and I could see them being helpful aids in teaching quorum and class lessons or in Family Home Evening.

Overview (Quoted from Deseret Book):
As followers of Christ, our desire is to become like Him. In fact, we have been commanded to do so. But how?

In Power to Become, Elder David A. Bednar explores how the Savior makes possible His divine commission, "Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect" (3 Nephi 12:48).

Chapters in this thought-provoking book highlight the importance of the Atonement, the spiritual gift of personal peace, the importance of priesthood ordinances, and the responsibility we have to obey willingly and endure valiantly.

"As we increase in learning about the Savior and His gospel," Elder Bednar writes, "as we strive with ever greater consistency to act in His doctrine, ordinances, and covenants, then we are blessed with power through His Atonement to increasingly become like Him." Power to Become introduces vital tools we all can use to invite these eternally significant blessings into our lives.
